EDUCATION AND MINDSET IN AFRICA

An educated workforce will enable Africa stimulate long term economic growth and reduce poverty. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 requires that we ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

The Covid-19 pandemic served to exacerbate the already existing disparities, with many children being excluded from quality education across Africa. There has been an increase in child marriages, pregnancies and drop-out rates due to the pandemic. Furthermore, with increased job losses, prioritizing of meager family income translates to education being given the least priority in the hierarchy of needs. Technological challenges in having both internet enabled devices and internet access also plays a big role in posing a barrier for continuous learning in Africa.

Changing our mindset from just education for employment to education for employers is a crucial area that needs to be addressed so as to contextualizing education for Africa. With increasingly high unemployment rates, which snow ball into increased insecurity, instability and decreased community well-being, the release of over a million young people annually into the job market without formal skills creates a huge challenge in Africa. Creating youth employment, drawing out strategies towards education for sustainable development and capacity building will be key discussion points in this track.
