HEALTH IN AFRICA

The health landscape has transformed dramatically since the independence of many African countries 50 years ago. Africa bears 24% of the global disease burden with less than 1% of all health expenditure being spent in Africa while she has only 3% of the world's healthcare professionals.

Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 seeks to ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages. This calls for enhanced surveillance, diagnosis of disease and movement restrictions especially in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Strong health care systems have increased in their priority and have become a matter of survival and national security. Innovative health care has the potential to unlock quality and affordable universal health access, a goal that most African countries have struggled to achieve. Potential still exists for developing Africa as a hub for medical tourism by curbing the massive brain drain of Human Resource for Health (HRH). Moreover, by embracing digital technologies in the 4th Industrial Revolution, Africa has the potential to spearhead ground breaking medical interventions for her people.
