WATER AND WASTE MANAGEMENT IN AFRICA

WATER AND WASTE MANAGEMENT IN AFRICA

Although Africa is home to 67 major rivers and even more lakes, the water situation affecting the continent has continued to be a challenge. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 advocates for ensuring access for water and sanitation for all. Globally, 2.2 billion people lacked safely managed drinking water, 4.2 billion people lacked safely managed sanitation while 3 billion people lacked basic hand washing facilities at home (UN, 2017).

With the rapid growth of African cities, current water management systems cannot keep up the ever growing demand for this precious commodity. This necessitates a rethinking of strategies that can be employed to resolve the water challenges across Africa. To preserve the finite commodity, a push towards recycling waste water for serving the needs of the increasing population and fragile ecosystem is required. Treatment of effluent discharged from factories is crucial for the safe management of recycle waste water.

Moreover, solid waste presents an untapped potential for recycling. Increased global warming and pollution of the water sources due to solid waste is a concern that needs to be addressed in order to save our planet from steady degradation.
