James Kitavi
As Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in Mombasa, I am oriented towards "working on the business" as opposed to "working in the business." I have a mindset to view the entire business as an ecosystem that delivers value to the marketplace and customers. This particular mindset is an absolute necessity in the world we live in today to make sure our organisation is relevant not only for our employees, but for our customers as well.
Today’s workplaces are fast-paced and dynamic, with executives on information overload. As a leader I am a quick thinker and a fast learner who is able to “bounce” between tactical and strategic execution.
I am excellent communicator, I have used this skill to talk to investors, employees, and the public about my organisations vision and mission. As a leader, i have learnt to align to the purpose and mission of the organisation, and i am able to communicate or demonstrate that passion so that my team can rally.
An important quality I have acquired over the years as an executive is humility. While as executives may have one of the most important roles within an organisation, if they are filled with self-importance, this can reflect negatively in their dealings with employees and clients. I have learnt that leading with humility is an effective way to build trust and respect.
